Diefenbaker was a Westerner in a party that was dominated by Easterners, by Ontario businessmen, really. As a Western progressive with a Germanic name, he stood out almost by definition. But, there was also, I think, a personality trait that set him out. He was by nature suspicious, he was by nature a loner, and those things made him a difficult personality in anything. In his three-person law office he was a loner and he was difficult. In a political party he was a loner and he was difficult. He was just the kind of individual who was congenitally unable to work with other people in harmony. And that made him a renegade, that made him a difficult person to deal with, [and] that made him convinced that his own star was the only star worth following. And he knew where he was going in his own mind and if others would come with him then he would lead them to glory, or so he believed.
